East Bay United for Peace

“Our Grief Is Not a Cry for War”
September 10th Peace Lantern Ceremony at Lake Merritt

Oakland, CA  Tuesday evening, September 10, 2002, a broad coalition of East Bay peace groups will sponsor a vigil at Oakland’s Lake Merritt, in memory of the victims of September 11, 2001, and all victims of militarism, terror, and war, before and since.  Participants will gather at 7:00 p.m., at the Colonnade, Embarcadero between Grand and Lakeshore, to make peace lanterns in remembrance of those lost and for their hopes for a peaceful future.

Event schedule/Photo opportunities:

7:00 pm:  Make peace lanterns. Peace lanterns like these are traditionally floated in Japan in remembrance of the victims of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

7:20 pm:  Sunset circle begins, led by Western Shoshone spiritual leader Corbin Harney. Lantern-making continues.

7:50 pm:  Words of wisdom from Corbin Harney.

8:00 pm: Candlelight walk along Grand Avenue, turning on Bellevue, and ending at the beach by the gazebo.

8:25 pm: Lantern ceremony begins as walkers arrive at the beach. Native American flute music by Blue.

8:55 pm:  Remarks by Matthew Lasar of September 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows. Mr. Lasar lost his uncle in the World Trade Center.

9:11 pm: 5 minutes of silence in memory of all the victims of September 11 and all victims of militarism, terror, and war, before and since.

9:16 pm: Closing.
