Joanna Macy & Louie Vitale are old friends, each carrying a clear and compelling vision of nonviolent social & environmental change, with decades of activism testing & enacting that vision. “Joy of Resistance” is a rare opportunity to witness their intimate conversation in difficult times. On March 14, Louie will be released from prison, and this will be his first public talk after prison.

Eco-philosopher Joanna Macy, Ph.D. is a scholar, teacher, and writer on Buddhism, general systems theory, and deep ecology. A deeply respected voice in movements for peace, justice, and ecology, she interweaves scholarship with decades of activism.
Her methods have been adopted widely in classrooms, churches, and grassroots organizing, helping people transform despair and apathy — in the face of social and ecological crises — into constructive, collaborative action.

Louis Vitale’s dedication to nonviolent peace action and protection of human and civil rights is an inspiration. A Franciscan priest, Louie co-founded the Nevada Desert Experience. On November 19, 2006, Louie and Fr. Steve Kelly walked into Fort Huachuca, Arizona to deliver a letter denouncing torture to Major General Barbara Fast, commanding officer and a figure in the torture of detainees at Abu Ghraib. Kneeling in prayer, they were arrested for trespass and sentenced to five months in prison. For 12 years Louie was pastor of St. Boniface Church in San Francisco’s Tenderloin.
