My son is eight years old. He has a brother who is six. My older son has Asperger's autism and goes to a mainstreamed second grade. The question is this: He has an older friend (fifth grade) who my son seems to have a good pal relationship, however I am beginning to hear of episodes of this older 'pal' "hitting" my son with empty plastic soda bottles. My son reports no violence to him at school but I do not know if he would report it. He does not have many friends it seems, but he has a lot of acquaintances who seem to know him in the community. They say "Hi" at the grocery store and such, though my son often has a delayed response reciprocating this acknowledgment. What can I do to monitor this behavior and protect my son, bearing in mind I do not want to overreact and quash a friendship based on only reports of hitting? Is this just 'roughhousing' or is he forming a 'abuser/abused' relationship? What do you think?

well, if they're that young, it might not be anything besides them being weird. or (and i'm sure you dun want to hear this about your kid), it's something the other boy does infront of other kids to seem cool... if your son is slower than most kids, he's going to be an object of ridicule... unless he attends school with mindless clones. the friend might want to keep the image of "i don't really like him, i just make fun of him" infront of his other friends, while alone, he's a great friend to your son.

then again, i'm 15, don't have kids, don't baby-sit, have no idea what i'm talking about, ect...

Thank you for your comment. I have no delusions (Ha!) and indeed my son is a "FLK" a diagnosis occasionally heard in the medical community. He is unusual as am I, a "FLP".

J denies any anger or injury caused by the 'older kid'. He also has no signs of injury. Maybe it is roughhousing or mock fighting witnessed.

FLK = funny looking kid
FLP = funny looking parent

Very good advice
I do indeed spend a lot of time with the kids, D, and E. More time with the kids actually.

I often feel like I do not spend enough time with them though.
